| << Back E-mail Update December 3, 2003 Volume 3, Number 19 Supporters Turn Out For Channel Appreciation Day: On November 24, the Coalition hosted an afternoon of celebration and recognition for our many partners -- including members of Congress, state legislators, and key business, labor, agriculture, port, maritime, and community leaders -- throughout the Northwest who have consistently supported the Channel Deepening project over the past decade. This celebration marked the milestone of having received all federal and state environmental approvals, the resolution of all active litigation, the fully appropriated Oregon and Washington state matching funds, and the third Congressional appropriation for the project. Special thanks to U.S. Senator Patty Murray, Congressman Brian Baird, Congressman Earl Blumenauer, Congresswoman Darlene Hooley, Congressman David Wu, and the other impressive speakers who participated in this special event. Many Channel Deepening supporters attended and were recognized, and the Coalition also extends our gratitude to those supporters who were unable to attend. Again, we thank you! Coalition Keeps Expanding: We welcome the following organizations who officially joined the Coalition during the past two weeks: Port of Siuslaw Clackamas County (Oregon) Walla Walla County (Washington) Columbia River Presentations Available: If your civic organization, business, union, or local government would like an updated presentation about the importance of maritime trade to our region and the goals, implications, and current status of the Columbia River Channel Deepening project, please let us know. We would be delighted to provide an informative and interesting presentation at no cost. Feel free to contact the Coalition office to arrange for a presentation. Did You Know? The Columbia River Channel Deepening project is expected to generate approximately 1.8 million tons of additional cargo by 2010, growing to more than 4.3 million tons by 2030. Without a deeper channel, our regions ability to retain and expand businesses and family-wage jobs in the Northwest will be compromised. Please contact us with any questions, concerns, or information requests. Thanks for your partnership in building a stronger economy through maritime trade.
