E-mail Update – February 12, 2003 – Volume 3, Number 4

Confirmed Commitment By Wa State Legislators:
The 2nd Annual Olympia Channel Day was a success. Approximately 50 Coalition members participated in this lobby day on February 4, 2003, at the Washington State Capitol from businesses, farms, ports, labor unions, and communities across the state of Washington, along with a few representatives from Oregon. Once again, we succeeded in receiving confirmed commitment to support Channel Deepening from key legislative leaders and many other legislators representing southwest and eastern Washington. Legislators not only voiced their support for Channel Deepening, but further committed to ensuring that the $17.7 million requiring re-appropriation in Washington will be included in the states’ Capitol Budget for the next biennium.

Remaining Funds From $10 Million Released In Washington:
During the Olympia Channel Day event, it was announced that the WA Dept. of Transportation executed an agreement with the Washington non-federal sponsors (ports of Longview, Kalama, Vancouver, and Woodland) to release the remaining part of the $10 million originally appropriated back in 2001. After prolonged effort to ensure that Pacific Ocean crab beds will not be impacted by Channel Deepening, they finally succeeded in achieving the release of those funds and will now begin acquisition of upland disposal sites in Washington.

International Trade Day In Salem -- Wednesday, March 19th:
Please join other key leaders to express the importance of key trade and transportation issues, such as: Columbia River Channel Deepening; Road & Bridge improvement projects; International Air Service; adequate funding of state agencies/foreign trade; adoption of economic recovery (industrial lands/business recruitment); expanding and enhancing the role of International Trade Commission; etc. Not only will you have the opportunity to hear from key legislators in Oregon at this event, but you will also get the opportunity to meet one-on-one with your own state legislators.
  • International Trade Day: Wednesday, March 19, 2003 (9AM - 3PM)

Please plan to invest your time in this important lobby day. Transportation is available to Salem with prior registration. If you haven't already done so, RSVP by contacting Theeme Holznagel or call (503) 285-6343.

Coalition Keeps Expanding:
We welcome the following organization who recently officially joined the Coalition:
City of Milton-Freewater, Oregon

Did You Know
A study conducted by the Port of Portland, found that an average 4,000 domestic and international ships travel through the Columbia River bar each year carrying approximately 41 million tons of cargo. That cargo not only represents jobs – it represents this region’s connection to the world.

Please contact us with any questions, concerns, or information requests. Thanks for your partnership in building a stronger economy through maritime trade.
