E-mail Update -- November 11, 2004 -- Volume 4, Number 17

Adaptive Management & Monitoring Meeting Open To Public:
On Thursday, November 18, 2004, scientists will present and discuss the monitoring and research being done along the Columbia River estuary associated with the Columbia River Channel Improvement Project. This will be the first public meeting to discuss the monitoring and research being performed pertaining to the project. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) has undertaken an unprecedented level of research and monitoring as well as a strong adaptive management program, ensuring that the project moves forward in an environmentally sound manner.

This public meeting is a major part of the 2004 Anadromous Fish Evaluation Program (AFEP) review that is taking place on November 15-18, 2004. Many studies that have been conducted on anadromous fish in the Columbia River will be discussed. As part of the Adaptive Management Program, if any unanticipated effects are identified and need to be addressed, appropriate action will be determined.

These meetings are free and open to the public. The current agenda can be found on the Corps' website at: https://www.nwp.usace.army.mil/pm/e/enfish.htm. The meetings are being held at the World Trade Center, 121 SW Salmon Street, Suite 250 in Portland. You may register as early as 11:00 am on November 15th by signing in at the door.

Did You Know?
The value of wheat produced in Washington State in 2002 totaled $537 million. The ripple effect of wheat dollars on the state's economy creates jobs and revenue in food processing, transportation, wholesale, and retail industries. When the wheat dollars used to purchase goods and services are taken into account, wheat production contributes about $1.18 billion to total state output and $83 million in state and local taxes throughout Washington.

Please contact us with any questions, concerns, or information requests. Thanks for your partnership in building a stronger economy through maritime trade.
